Motivation and hygiene

Re-evaluation at 6–8 weeks
After healing, the assessment is repeated. In most cases non-surgical treatment is enough; some cases need surgery.

Periodontal maintenance
An appointment every 3 to 6 months is essential. The disease is chronic — once stabilised, it is monitored to avoid relapse.

How do I know if I have gum disease?
Bleeding gums, redness, swelling, receding gums, loose teeth, persistent bad breath. These symptoms require a consultation.
Is periodontitis contagious?
Bacteria can be transmitted via saliva (shared utensils), especially within a household. Close relatives are advised to be checked too.
Is periodontal surgery painful?
It is done under local anaesthesia. After-effects (mild pain, swelling) are managed with simple painkillers. Healing in 2 to 4 weeks.
Can I have implants with periodontitis?
An implant can only be placed once periodontitis is stabilised. Active periodontitis is a major failure factor.
